HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Our family loves Halloween. All the kids (and some adults) enjoy dressing up in costumes. On Wednesday, we had our annual ward Fall Festival. As the YW president, I'm nominally in charge. We had a chili cook-off and a trunk-or-treat event. We'd planned on a hay ride, but the persistent cold weather and rain cancelled that.
Ellie went as a chicken with her own baby chick, which I think she named Potato Chip Jr. (I think his parents were tragically eaten. His father at KFC, and his mother ventured to Chik-fil-A, and tragically never came back.)
Miles was dressed as a hobbit ready to embark on a grand adventure, complete with a walking stick and Sting!
Ian was dressed specifically as Elder Payne (an elder currently assigned to our ward). It took a lot of hair gel and a straightener to get his hair to look like this.
Liam was dressed as an "evil wizard." Unfortunately, this meant he went around to all the parents at our church and explained, in a creepy voice, that he was going to "curse their little children". He later explained to me that this meant he would turn them into adorable little elephants.
Overall, the chili cook-off went really well, and the kids got a ton of stuff at the now indoor trunk or treat (see again the weather). Our ward may be small, but they are super generous.

On Thursday, October 30th, the homeschool co-op Raising Arrows had a field trip to Jackson's Orchard. Ellie got to hang out with her bestie, Sarah, and Benjamin (Sarah's older brother).
Ellie's favorite part of Jackson's Orchard was the delicious apple cider slushy, and the small cow that came over and licked her. Sarah and Ellie loved bouncing around in the hay area and made a hay fort. Ellie buried Sarah in the hay in order to "warm her up"...
After the field trip, they got to go out to Chick-fil-A, which is a favorite eating spot.
Friday was Halloween. Miles wore his hobbit costume to school, and got his picture into the school Facebook page.
That night, after eating pizza, Matt took Ellie and Miles trick-or-treating in a super fun area in Glasgow where they give out lots of candy, and some of them put up full haunted houses. They also took a moment to go visit their great-grandparents in Glasgow.
Ian opted to remain home and watch a scary movie with his friend Dale. They watched Room 1408 and ate lots of junk food. After watching their movie, they went through the haunted corn maze. Liam explained that he had gotten all the candy he needed from the ward trunk-or-treat and opted to hang out at home. He was also uninterested in the scary movie, but was perfectly happy to take some junk food back up to his apartment.
On Saturday was a Stake temple day. Miles had one final marching band competition. We invited Dale to join us since we had an extra seat in the truck. While the boys were doing baptisms, Ellie and I hung out at a park down the street, where Ellie hid in a tree and saw if she could startle and or scare people. She tells me she was very successful.
After the temple trip, we grabbed some Subway and then went to the zoo for a little sightseeing before going home.
Liam and I hung out together. Liam was very emphatic about which animals he wanted to see. Mostly, these were animals from Planet of the Apes.
Although he always wants to see the Koalas, he is always disappointed that they are still asleep. We keep trying to explain that since they sleep 23 hours a day, they are pretty much always going to be asleep, but hope springs eternal, and Liam is convinced one day they will wake up. He also thinks that the Koalas would be better off if they lived at Kentucky Down Under instead of the zoo.
The Louisville Zoo still had up a bunch of their Halloween decorations, which are always pretty fun. They had an entire section decorated like a scooby doo adventure. Naturally, Ian and Dale picked up new girl friends. I applaud Ian's taste in that he went for Velma instead of Daphne. Matt and Ellie went together and made sure to check out the lynxes (Ellie's favorite) and the sea lions (Matt's favorite).
Ian and Dale went off and did their own thing. Based on the million pictures and big grins, they seemed to have a really good time. Miles placed 2nd in 2-A marching bands at the mid-state competition, but he is pretty relieved that after the community performance on Monday, he will finally be done with marching band for the year.
