Day two in New Orleans, we opted to do an Airboat Bayou and Alligator tour, as this is a uniquely Louisiana experience. On our way to our outing, Liam announced, "Look, it's the Carnival Liberty!" We looked across the bridge, and indeed, there was the Carnival Liberty, our cruise ship. We were all very impressed. Liam then announced (much to our delight), "I'm a GENIUS". We drove to Airboat Adventures, where we found they had two important things: A bigfoot statue and a pet albino alligator.
Once we got on the airboat, our Louisiana tour guide began discussing the Bayou ecosystem. Ellie immediately asked, "Why does his voice make me want to sleep?" The answer was his very low and slow Louisiana accent.
The airboat tour was a lot of fun. We saw a lot of young alligators. One interesting fact he taught us is that the alligator's metabolism is regulated by temperature. If it is cold, they cannot digest food, so they eat a lot less in colder weather, and trying to eat when it is cold out can actually kill them, as the food just rots in their stomachs. In warmer weather, they can digest food, which is why they live in hot climates.
Also, we found out that if you have cattle grazing on your land in Louisiana, you don't have to pay property taxes. So there are a lot of cattle, and in fact, there were some cattle grazing in the Bayous. Don't know that I'd want to keep my cattle grazing next to alligators, but to each their own...
In a hilarious turn of events, there is a "Voodoo" flavored chip. Liam kept pointing to it and asking if it was "real voodoo". I thought he wanted a bag. However, once I bought it, he point-blank refused to touch it...apparently, he figured "real voodoo" meant the chips would curse him. Also, Matt took his Father's Day hat (from Ellie) out for its first airing. It served him very well, both stylish and useful.
After all these awesome adventures, it was time to head back to our Airbnb. We stopped at a mom and pop place that served very, very deeply fried foods, and Ellie tried fried frog legs (she was not a fan). We spent the rest of the evening washing laundry, packing our bags, and getting ready for our AWESOME CRUISE!!!
