During the
early part of August, our caterpillars started to get more and more lethargic.
One started spinning anchors to the side of its mason jar; the bigger and
fatter of the two lay flopped on a rock. Fearing it to be dead, we put it
outside without the boys seeing. Looking back on it now, that caterpillar may
have been preparing a chrysalis himself.
The surviving chrysalis made the boys really excited. They knew what was coming next. So, we had them pull out their "Field Books" they have been working on. They identified the color of the chrysalis and cut out a piece of felt to represent it. They then were instructed to color a picture of what they thought the emerging butterfly would look like.
Here is a picture of Ian intently figuring out what his caterpillar will look like when it emerges the chrysalis.
Miles was pretty intent too. He just liked having the opportunity to color as much as he wanted.... occasionally deciding the work table needed some color too.
Here is Liam with the finished product. He figured the butterfly would be the color of butter, a nice golden yellow.
My precious boys!!!!!!!!
