Ahhh, Field Day! It’s a time of physical activity, a chance
to get wet and most of all, a breakup of the usual school routine. There was a
little concern that the kids would get rained out as the weather has been
pretty crazy lately. Instead, it was overcast and perfect for those of us not
intending to get wet.
We had to alter some of our plans. Initially we were going
to go to each kids’ Field Day separately as they were being run at the same
time at different schools. But Miles got sick and so Lisa stayed home with him
so I could go hang out with the school age boys. I started the day with Liam’s
Field Day and ended it with Ian’s.
Here is Liam playing one of the relays. The idea was to take a tether ball, and go as quickly as you can around the cone while balancing it on a plunger (unused). He did great and decided to cheat by holding it on. When I pointed that out to him, that's where he started grinning.
Here is Liam with two of his classmates and his teacher, Ms. Lucky. Liam loves being in Ms. Lucky's class; not to say that he doesn't like Ms. McGinn's class, but he associates being older by being in Ms. Lucky's class. He once had to go to Ms. McGinn's class for naughty behavior. He called it a "baby class" and after that insisted that he always go to Ms. Lucky's class. The classmate to his right is Daisy, "The PR representative for the Special Education class," as Ms. McGinn calls her. She is friendly, vivacious and Liam's favorite person to hang around. It helps that she likes Liam a lot too.
The next even involved the kids running relays past their teachers who were tasked to toss wet sponges and balls at them. Liam had a great time and is fast enough he managed to stay dry most of the time.
Realizing that the best part was when you got wet, he started stopping in the middle of the track so he could get wet. Here he is getting doused by Ms. Lucky as Daisy runs by.
Ms. Becky got him really well here.
After the water, Liam's class next rotated to the cafeteria where part of the military band played a bunch of songs. Having auditory sensitivity to the loud music, he covered his ears.
And was greatly relieved when they brought him headphones to muffle the sound.
This is a group photo of Liam's best friend Daisy, Ms. Harris directly behind him, Ms. Becky next to her and of course, Ms. Lucky sitting next to him. He had a great time this first part and was sad to see me go.
Directly after that, I went in search of Ian at Clearcreek Elementary. I found him in the gym.
This event involved grabbing stuffed animals and tossing them into an inflatable basket for points. Ian wasn't as interested in making baskets as much as he was interested in playing with the different toys.
He did much better at the soccer event. He very carefully dribbled the ball to the net and kicked it in.
He then just as carefully kicked it back to his teammate.
This next event was a ring toss using over sized equipment. They used hula hoops and cones. Ian did pretty well.
Considering what a little guy he is.
The tug of war proved difficult for him and his little team mates, but he enjoyed it more than any of the other events. If only he had Liam on his team!
The next game was a water game. The kids were tasked with passing water to the next team mate via plastic cups into a bucket at the end of the line. Very little water made into the bucket, sometimes intentionally.
Field Day for Ian ended with snack time. This was to be followed up with changing out of their wet clothes and heading over to lunch. It was great fun to be there with the boys, and hang out with them on their special day!
That just seems like so much more fun than cleaning up Miles'vomit. I love my little guys and can't wait for school to get out and enjoy a summer full of little boy crazies.
ReplyDeleteOut fields days were usually too cold and involved lots of water games, or too hot and involved no water at all. I don't know why.
