Our Chickens Lay Their First Egg and a Visit From the Dingwalls

After months of raising a group of not-very-bright but super adorable chicks into full grown hens we finally got our very first egg. This was a big moment for us and for several days after the kids treated looking for eggs in the nesting box like a treasure hunt.

Much to our delight we found out our friends the Dingwalls were in town. Naturally we wanted to go see them and go some place fun. Even more naturally we decided to go to Thanksgiving Point. We had a great time going to the dinosaur museum, the kid's museum, and the gardens.

The kids were all over the place having a wonderful time. This gave the grown ups plenty of time to chat and catch up. I especially loved meeting the newest Dingwall, little tiny baby Emily. She was an adorable armful. At the end of this trip we got a phone call from our neighbor Helen Monson. She let us know that a neighbor's dog got loose and broke into our coop and hutch killing one of our chickens (Chicken Little the Barred Rock) and Miles' pet rabbit. The kids were devastated and wept the whole way home. Matt and I went and buried the bodies. The neighbor whose dog was responsible came over very apologetic and helped us repair the remaining hutch for the remaining rabbit. We had a long talk to the kids about the resurrection.
