We were really supposed to leave Texas on 06/17/15 and I really felt like it was a great birthday present to hit the road, but with various obnoxious delays in getting Matt's DD214 we didn't really leave until 06/19/15. The boys travel very well and having my fabulous mom there to help out was great, but I highly recommend traveling with a small infant (however adorable) as they do not like riding in car seats and scream in protest sort of non stop.
Our first stop on 06/20/15 was at Carlsbad Caverns. The boys loved it. We stopped at the museum and looked around at all the exhibits there. Naturally we picked up a magnet for our vacation magnet collection. Then after exploring the museum we headed down to the fantastic cave. I carried Ellie in her baby wrap and so she mostly enjoyed it. She was very actively looking around and enthusiastically kicking her little feet. Of course we all had to wear our matching family trip shirts that we had made.
The cave itself was magnificent. The boys were troopers and hiked the whole way down besides hiking an extra hike once we reached the bottom. The formations were phenomenal and we all really enjoyed it. Of course even better is the fact that an elevator takes you back up to the top.
After all that exhausting hiking we had a picnic lunch. The boys were quiet and well behaved for the rest of that driving day...the same could not be said about their baby sister.
Then it was on to our next road trip adventure!
Our next stop on 06/21/15 was Mesa Verde. We hiked down on the "Tree House" hike. The boys thought it was pretty amazing. The boys had picked out their suveniors from Carlsbad Caverns. Liam got a lantern. Miles got a miner's hat (as seen below), and if you keep scrolling down you will see the bat that Ian got.
All the boys thought it would be pretty neat to leave in a cave house and couldn't figure out why these ancient people would ever want to leave them.
Notice that once again the boys are dressed alike. I've always found it easier when taking the boys out and about to have them wear similar if not identical shirts. That way, not only are they easier to keep track of, but if one wanders off I can ask people if they have seen a shorter or taller version of a child I still have.
The boys loved having their grandma with us on our adventures. Grandma Jamie was always up for a good hike, willing to share her water, and go exploring with inquisitive little minds.
The boys of course loved the ancient houses, but especially loved that they could climb the ladder down into a "cellar" like area and turn on Miles miner hat light.
Ian informed me that his bat could see in the dark without Miles' light. After this it was back in the car and time to head on to our new home in Utah.
